DESCRIPTION
The DRV8815 and DRV8816 provide integrated control and a power stage to drive small brushless DC motors
such as those used in polygon scanners in laser printers.
Speed is regulated using a clock input, which is frequency-locked to the motor rotation. An internal speed
differentiator, digital integrator, and filter complete the speed control loop, which eliminates many external
components. Adjustment of the speed control circuitry is via EEPROM programming, which can be set at the
factory, or through a serial interface. Use of the serial interface is not required for normal device operation.
Alternately, an externally generated PWM input can be supplied to directly control the duty cycle of the output
stage.
Hall sensor comparators are integrated, as well as a linear regulator to provide power to the hall sensors. An
FGOUT signal is synthesized from the hall sensor inputs, or alternately from an external TACH input signal
(DRV8815 only).
Internal shutdown functions are provided for stalled rotor, overspeed, overcurrent, short circuit, under voltage,
and overtemperature conditions. The FAULTn pin (DRV8815 only) provides indication of a fault condition.
The DRV8815 is packaged in a 28-pin HTSSOP package, and includes pins to access the serial programming
interface. The DRV8816 is packaged in a smaller 20-pin HTSSOP package.
