Ringing Voltage Detection

The sensitivity of the ringing voltage detection  
circuitry can be set to the internal default value of  
16Vrms by setting RSEN to logic 0. If a user-  
programmable voltage is required, RSEN is set to  
logic 1, and a voltage is applied to the RS pin. The  
relationship between the detection threshold voltage  
applied to the RS pin and the actual ringing  
amplitude detected is shown below:

The third condition is shown in Figure 5 (c) and  
requires current limiting. It is more commonly known  
as French current limiting but has since been  
adopted by the TBR021 specification. The French  
current limit can be applied by linking VL1 to Vneg  
on the MT91633 and applying a DC voltage (referred  
to Vneg) of 5V. Note that R7 and Z2 (Figure 6) are  
only fitted if French current limiting is required.  
A potential divider consisting of two resistors from  
Vdd to 0V can be used to generate Vth at RS.  
An AC ringing voltage across Tip and Ring will cause  
RV to output TTL pulses at the ringing frequency.  
Dummy Ringer  
The curves have been taken from ETSI  
specifications for Europe, TBR021, and the relevant  
specifications relating to individual countries, and  
were correct at time of going to press. It is advisable  
to confirm your DC mask requirements before  
designing the product into a system.  
A dummy ringer circuit can be connected across Tip  
and Ring, which is an AC load representing a  
telephone s mechanical ringer.  
In normal circumstances, when a telephone is on-  
hook and connected to the PSTN, its AC (Ringer)  
load is permanently presented to the network. This  
condition is used by many PTTs to test line continuity  
by forcing a small AC current onto the line and  
measuring the voltage across Tip and Ring.  
Input Impedance  
The input impedance to match a particular country is  
set by fitting external components to the MT91633.  
These components are the same values as the  
required output impedance e.g. for a 600Ω input  
impedance, fit a 600Ω resistor between VPOS and  
VIR. Alternatively, a programmable CODEC can be  
used to modify the input impedance from 600Ω. It  
should be noted that a different resistor network  
(MH80632) is required for a design with a different  
input impedance to 600Ω. See application notes for  
further information.  
Today s telecom equipment may not have an AC load  
present across Tip and Ring (e.g. modems);  
therefore, any testing carried out by the PTT will see  
an open circuit across Tip and Ring. In this instance  
the PTT assumes that the line continuity has been  
damaged.  
To overcome this problem many PTTs specify that a  
Dummy Ringer is presented to the network at all  
times. The dummy ringer can be configured such  
that it has no effect during off-hook operation. The  
requirement for the Dummy Ringer is country  
specific.  
Network Balance  
The network balance impedance of the device is set  
to be the same as the output impedance.
