DESCRIPTION
Interpoint’s 125 watt MSS-MHL DC/DC converter is the first model
in a new series of high reliability DC/DC converters. A built in EMI
filter compliant to MIL-STD-461E, CE102, and an output filter elimi-
nate the need for additional modules or components. With an 80 to
400 VDC input, a 2.5 to 6 VDC output, and a wide operating temper-
ature range of –55° to +100°C, the MSS-MHL is well suited for aero-
space, automotive, commercial, and industrial applications. The
trimmable output can provide 5 VDC for current or older applications
while the same device can later be trimmed to 3 or 2.5 VDC to
accommodate newer voltage requirements. Typical efficiency
ranges from 78% to 85%. Two screening levels are available “R “
and “ER” offering varying levels of temp cycle, burn-in, and electrical
test. The converters are qualified for up to 60 Gs shock, and up to
10 Gs vibration. Please see Table 1 for screening information and
Table 2 for qualification information.
OPERATION
In order to achieve the wide 5 to 1 input voltage range (80 to 400
VDC), and up to 12 V output voltage trim capability (6 to 18 VDC),
the MSS Series DC/DC converters use a new current mode
controlled boost/forward voltage regulator operating at a fixed
frequency of 500 khz. This design uses current mode programming
which provides excellent line rejection performance and pulse-by-
pulse current limiting. A high performance feedback transformer is
used for isolation and also supplies secondary Vcc.
SYNC, INHIBIT, AND REMOTE SENSE
Sync in, sync out, inhibit, and remote sense are additional controls
to enhance converter performance. Sync in, sync out, and inhibit are
referenced to control return (Ctrl Rtn, pin 7). The converters can be
synchronized to an external clock using the sync in terminal (pin 9).
Two or more converters can be synchronized by using the sync out
terminal (pin 6) which helps reduce interference and the possible
generation of beat frequencies. The sync terminals can be left
unconnected when not used.
The MSS Series™ converters offer three power levels, two input
voltage levels, and two output voltage levels. Power level choices
are medium (125W), high (250W), and low (40W). To minimize
package size each power level has its own package. The high input
voltage option of 80 to 400 VDC encompasses 120 volt and 270 volt
busses. The low input voltage option of 16 to 75 VDC covers 28 volt
and 48 volt busses. The two output voltage choices of 2.5 to 6 and
6 to 18 cover the newer low voltage requirements, the standard 5
volt requirements, plus the 12 and 15 volt requirements of distrib-
uted power.
The converter operates normally when the Inhibit terminal (pin 8) is
left open or connected to an open collector interface. Pulling the
inhibit low disables switching and results in no output and a low 5
mA input current.
The remote sense terminals (pins 3 and 4) can be connected at the
load to minimize line voltage drops, maintaining the desired output
voltage directly at the load. If not used, the sense terminals should
be connected to their respective Vout terminals (pins 1 and 2).
INPUT AND OUTPUT FILTERING: LOW NOISE
All converters have an integrated input EMI filter and output filter.
The MSS 125 watt series, in a package 4.6 x 2.5 x 0.45 inches
(116.8 x 61.0 x 11.43 mm), replaces an industry standard configura-
tion of three half bricks (input filter, converter, and output filter). The
EMI filter meets the conducted emission requirements of MIL-STD-
CONVERTER CONSTRUCTION/PACKAGING
MSS Series converters are constructed from surface mount compo-
nents soldered to a printed circuit board. The PCB is attached to a
lightweight, metal matrix composite, baseplate which provides the
high thermal conductivity of aluminum but has the advantage of a
low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) and higher strength. A
potting compound is used to enhance the assembly’s ability to meet
harsh environmental requirements.
461E, CE102. The output filter keeps the output ripple to
maximum of 75 mV peak-to-peak over the range of 10 kHz to 20
MHz.
