Temperature and Optical Power Output Control for DFB Laser  
Applications using the X9438.

Recent years have seen the use of Distributed Feedback  
(DFB) Lasers become widespread in applications such  
as CATV, Telecommunications, and computer Networks,  
to name but a few. With this, comes a need to control  
these Lasers in order to provide efficient operation, and  
obtain the maximum usable lifetime from these some-  
times expensive DFB devices.  
The X9438 provides two independent programmable Op  
Amps, and two independent Digitally Controlled Potenti-  
ometers (DCPs) in one pack-age. These elements are  
accessed using a common 2-Wire Serial Interface, and  
can be controlled using the I C bus provided on-board  
many commonly available, and inexpensive microcon-  
trollers.

The efficient operation of a DFB Laser, involves namely,  
the control of :  
There are many readily available DFP Lasers which inte-  
grate into the one package, devices which enable the  
monitoring and control of laser optical power output and  
temperature. The LSC2210 from Hewlett Packard, is an  
example of one such device.  
• Operating Temperature,  
• Optical Power Output.  
Figure 1 shows the pin assignment of the LSC2210. In  
addition to the Laser Diode (LD), there are pin connec-  
tions for a Thermistor, Monitor pin Photodiode (PD), and  
a Peltier effect Thermoelectric Cooler (TEC).  
Changes in ambient operating temperature, and degra-  
dation of Optical Power Output with time however, can be  
controlled simply, using the X9438.
