Introduction  
The AMCC S3055 transceiver chip with Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) is a fully integrated serialization/deserializa-  
tion SONET STS-48/OC-48 (2.488 Gbps) interface device. This device is suitable for SONET based ATM  
applications. The AMCC S3055 chip provides the first stage of the digital processing of a receive and a transmit  
SONET STS-48 bit-serial stream. In the receive path, the S3055 converts an OC-48 bit-serial data stream into 16-bit  
parallel data and recovers the clock from the serial data. In the transmit path, it converts 16-bit parallel data into bit-  
serial data. The chip can be used with a 155.52 MHz reference clock in support of existing system clocking schemes.  
In the multiplex direction, the S4802 locates the STS-12/STM-4 or STS-3/STM-1 frames, descrambles the data, and  
processes the TOH bytes. The S4802 then selects some combination of these signals or tributaries from the demux  
direction by housing high-speed interfaces for pointer processing. The pointer processor output may then be muxed  
into an STS-48.  
In the demultiplexing direction, the S4802 accepts a 16-bit wide STS-48/STM-16 signal. The S4802 locates the frame  
in this signal, performs descrambling, processes the Transport Overhead (TOH) bytes, and performs pointer process-  
ing. If this signal doesn’t contain a STS-48c/AU-4-16c payload, S4802 demultiplexes the signal to four groups of  
either one STS-12/STM-4 or four STS-3/STM-1 tributaries. The selected tributaries then process in the demux direc-  
tion from generators that generate the TOH bytes (or SOH bytes in SDH mode), perform scrambling, and output the  
data up to 16 serial interfaces.  
Figure 1 shows a typical network application block diagram with an AMCC MISSOURI S4802 SONET/SDH STS-48  
Framer, AMCC NILE S1202 SONET/SDH STS-12 Mapper, AMCC S3055 multi-rate transceiver with CDR, AMCC  
S3032 transceiver with CDR and Infineon V23818-N15-L353 fiber optic transceiver.
