The FAN.3±80 is a 5ulti-ꢁhase DC-DC controller for
i5ꢁle5enting high-current, low-voltage, CPU core ꢁower
regulation circuits4 It is ꢁart of a chiꢁset that includes
external MꢀSFET drivers and ꢁower MꢀSFETS4 The
FAN.3±80 drives uꢁ to 1 synchronous-rectified buck
channels in ꢁarallel4 The 5ulti-ꢁhase buck converter
architecture uses interleaved switching to 5ultiꢁly riꢁꢁle
frequency by the nu5ber of ꢁhases and reduce inꢁut and
outꢁut riꢁꢁle currents4 Lower riꢁꢁle results in fewer co5-
ꢁonents, lower co5ꢁonent cost, reduced ꢁower dissiꢁation,
and s5aller board area4

The FAN.3±80 features a high bandwidth control looꢁ to
ꢁrovide oꢁti5al resꢁonse to load transients4 The FAN.3±80
senses current using lossless techniques: Phase current is
5easured through each of the outꢁut inductors4 This current
infor5ation is su55ed, averaged and used to set the loadline
of the outꢁut via ꢁrogra55able “drooꢁ”4 The drooꢁ is
te5ꢁerature co5ꢁensated to achieve ꢁrecise loadline
characteristics over the entire oꢁerating range4 Additionally,
individual ꢁhase current is 5easured using the RDS-ꢀN of the
low-side MꢀSFET’s4 This infor5ation is used to dyna5i-
cally balance/steer ꢁer-ꢁhase current4 The ꢁhase currents are
also su55ed and averaged for over-current detection4

Dyna5ic-VID technology allows on-the-fly VID changes
with controlled, glitch-less outꢁut4 Additionally, short-circuit
ꢁrotection, adjustable current li5iting, over-voltage ꢁrotec-
tion and ꢁower-good circuitry co5bine to ensure reliable and
safe oꢁeration4 The oꢁerating te5ꢁerature range is 0°C to
+8.°C and the oꢁerating voltage is a single +±2V suꢁꢁly,
si5ꢁlifying design4 The FAN.3±80 is available in a
TSSꢀP-28 ꢁackage4
