The maximum current rating of the CXB1816 depends on the case temperature (Tc) when the LED has reached thermal equilibrium under
stꢀady-statꢀ opꢀration. Thꢀ graph shown bꢀlow assumꢀs that thꢀ systꢀm dꢀsign ꢀmploys good thꢀrmal managꢀmꢀnt (thꢀrmal intꢀrfacꢀ
material and heat sink) and may vary when poor thermal management is employed. Please refer to the Mechanical Dimensions section
on pagꢀ 14 for thꢀ location of thꢀ Tc mꢀasurꢀmꢀnt point.
Another important factor in good thermal management is the temperature of the Light Emitting Surface (LES). Cree recommends a
maximum LES temperature of 135 °C to ensure optimal LED lifetime. Please refer to the Thermal Design section on page 15 for more
information on LeS tꢀmpꢀraturꢀ mꢀasurꢀmꢀnt.
