DESCRIPTION  
The HFM5300 modem can be used for asynchronous  
transmission of data and control lines over single optical  
fiber. Single fiber communication is achieved by means  
of a dual state optoelectronic device which is alternately  
switched between transmitt and receive mode by a single  
integrated circuit. The modem is designed to operate on  
a single fiber as either a true modem, where the hand  
shake and control lines are locally interactive (handshake  
mode) or as a multiplexer transferring the input states of  
both the data and control lines to the far end modem  
(data transmission mode). The HFM5300 modem  
provides EMI/RFI protection, data security, and  
eliminates ground loop and lightning problems.  
APPLICATION  
The unit can be powered using an SPX5135 power cube,  
or through pin 9 of the 25 pin D-connector using +10 V at  
50 mA referenced to pin 7, signal ground. Any standard  
size multimode simplex fiber optic cable can be used  
provided that the optical budget for the cable size chosen  
is sufficient. This will depend on the link length and the  
number of splices in the cable run. Using 50 micron core  
diameter cable, link lengths of 2 km are attainable. The  
modem is available with either ST¨ or SMA optical  
connectors. Link status is indicated by a bicolour LED on  
the end of the modem. This indicator changes from red to  
green as synchronisation is achieved. An orange, display  
occurs in the transition state.
