TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION / APPLICATION  
The block diagram for the Merrimac MMFM-IQD-1F-2.6G, I&Q  
demodulator, is shown above. The demodulator is a microwave integrated  
circuit consisting of two stripline circuits (power divider and quadrature  
hybrid), and two MMIC mixers. The multilayer package provides a surface-  
mount interface, and is suitable for pick-and-place assembly.  
The I&Q demodulator converts to the difference frequency between the  
RF and LO input signals. The resulting baseband I and Q signals are  
equal in amplitude and 90 degrees out of phase, with a lead/lag  
relationship depending on the greater of the RF or LO input signal  
frequencies. For the case of coherent RF and LO frequencies, the I&Q  
demodulator detects the phase difference between the RF and LO signals  
and yields quadrature error voltages. The I and Q error voltages follow  
the COSINE and SINE of the difference angle, respectively.  
The principal function of an I&Q network is to determine phase information  
from an RF signal as compared to a reference LO signal. The phase  
information has many applications in communications, navigation, and  
radar systems, since it is used to encode information, as well as to provide  
positional data. In digital microwave communication systems which utilize  
PSK or QAM modulation, the I and Q signals are converted to baseband  
digital data streams. Additionally, I&Q networks are used in Costas loops  
to extract a coherent carrier frequency from a modulated signal. In radar  
systems, the baseband I and Q signals are applied directly to video  
amplifier circuits which drive A/D converters for final signal processing.
