PRODUCT SUMMARY
CX74040: Tx ASIC for WCDMA and UMTS Applications
The CX74040 Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) is a
APPLICATIONS
single supply, monolithic integrated circuit that incorporates all
the active functional blocks required for a transmitter. It is
designed for use in Wideband Code Division Multiple Access
(WCDMA) and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System
(UMTS) voice/data applications in the IMT-2000 frequency
band.
• WCDMA
FEATURES
• Single battery cell operation (2.7 V < VCC < 3.3 V)
• Low power consumption in all operating modes
• Transmit power control with 90 dB dynamic range
• Variable gain RF block to meet Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)
• 100 to 1200 MHz oscillator (external tank)
• VCO_ON feature to increase the talk time of the radio
• Two separate Phase Lock Loop (PLL) synthesizers: dual-
loop multiband operation, power-save mode for both
standby and lower frequency of operation
The highly integrated super-heterodyne transmitter comprises
all the critical components to implement the transmitter chain:
an In-Phase and Quadrature (I/Q) modulator that accepts the
analog I and Q outputs from the baseband processor and
converts them to Intermediate Frequency (IF) signals; a Voltage
Controlled Oscillator (VCO) and VHF synthesizer to generate the
Local Oscillator (LO) signal for the quadrature demodulators; a
UHF synthesizer to control the UHF oscillator; and a Variable
Gain Amplifier (VGA), which is required in CDMA systems to
provide a linear variable output power at the antenna.
• Fully programmable PLL dividers, selectable charge-pump
currents for multi-VCO applications controlled via the Serial
Bus Interface
The output of the VGA is fed to the upconverter with a provision
of Rx band filtering using a discrete IF filter. The output of the
upconverter is fed to the power amplifier pre-driver and filtered
using a bandpass filter. The output is sent to an external power
amplifier to obtain the rated final output power at the antenna.
• 40-pin, 6 mm x 6 mm RFLGA package with downset paddle
The device package and pinout for the 40-pin RF Land Grid
Array (RFLGA™) device is shown in Figure 1. A block diagram
of the CX74040 is shown in Figure 2.
