Foreign-Exchange-Office Chip Set

The Teridian 73M1966 is a two chip solution that uses Teridian’s unique data access

arrangement (DAA) function designed exclusively for Foreign-Exchange-Office (FXO) of

Voice-over-IP (VoIP) systems. The device provides most of the circuitry to connect PCM

formatted voice channels to a PSTN via a two wire twisted pair interface.

Key Applications

The 73M1966 interfaces through simple standard interfaces. A PCM Highway interface

provides the data path and device control is provided by an SPI. These interfaces allow the

73M1966 to be easily connected and controlled with other similar devices connected to

the PCM highway and SPI such as POTS Codecs, ISDN Codecs, T1/E1 framers, etc.

The chip set constitutes two separate devices that provide the necessary functionality and

the protection required for worldwide homologation. The 73M1906 is a host side device

and provides the digital data and control interfaces. The 73M1916 is the line side device.

With better than 2.0 in²(10.2 cm²) board area and a very competitive BOM cost, a complete

universal FXO may be realized with only a few additional standard external components.

Suitable applications for the 73M1966 include VoIP equipment that have a need to

provide connectivity to the PSTN for purposes of guaranteeing emergency service calling,

redundancy for supplementary connectivity for voice, maintenance services.

Based on an innovative and patented technology, which sets new standards in reliability

and cost. A small pulse transformer forms a digital isolation barrier, transferring both

power and data to the PSTN line side components. This results in reliable performance

in presence of EMI and a tolerance to line voltage variations by providing power to the line

side across the barrier thus enhancing overall performance.
